Admitted to practice law in the State and Federal Courts of New Jersey since 1978, Roger J. McLaughlin has maintained a law office in Monmouth County since that time. As senior partner of the firm of McLaughlin Stauffer & Shaklee, P.C., Mr. McLaughlin has served as counsel to numerous public entities and local governing bodies as well as private and corporate clients and banking institutions.
Mr. McLaughlin has appeared before numerous Planning and Zoning Boards and local governing bodies on behalf of property owners and developers in connection with site plan, subdivision and variance applications.
As a Rule 1:40 Qualified Mediator, Mr. McLaughlin has mediated disputes in contractual, employment, construction, professional liability and property matters.
Mr. McLaughlin has served as the Township Attorney for the Township of Manalapan since 2010 and served as the Township Attorney for the Township of Wall from 1990 to 2007. He serves as Special Counsel to the Township of Freehold, the Borough of Roosevelt and the Freehold Township Planning Board. He has also served as Counsel to the Sayreville Economic and Redevelopment Agency and as Bond Counsel to the Borough of Spring Lake; the Brielle Board of Education; the Borough of Brielle; and the South Monmouth Regional Sewerage Authority. He has served as Special Counsel to other public bodies such as the Monmouth County Improvement Authority and the Township of Toms River.
In addition, Mr. McLaughlin has served various banking institutions as review counsel for commercial loan transactions. Among the banking institutions Mr. McLaughlin has represented in that capacity are Allaire Community Bank, Central Jersey Bank, Commerce Bank, National Community Bank and Ocean First Bank. He also served as counsel to the South Monmouth Board of Realtors.
Mr. McLaughlin is a member of the New Jersey State and American Bar Associations; the National Association of Bond Lawyers; the New Jersey Institute of Local Government Attorneys; the New Jersey State League of Municipalities and the Monmouth County Bar Association. He has served as Chairman of the Local Government Committee of the Monmouth County Bar Association and has served on a League of the Municipalities Advisory Committee. Mr. McLaughlin has also lectured on subjects related to municipal law, land use and zoning; and has served as an expert witness in those fields.
Mr. McLaughlin has been named each year from 2006 to 2023 as a "Super Lawyer" by New Jersey Monthly Magazine, one of only few attorneys in New Jersey so recognized in the field of State, Local & Municipal Government Law.
In 2015, Mr. McLaughlin was the recipient of the Michael A. Pane Award, given annually by the New Jersey Institute of Local Government Attorneys and the New Jersey League of Municipalities. The Michael A. Pane Award honors a municipal professional who exemplifies the highest standards of ethics and whose work has significantly enhanced the integrity of local government.
